Steed and Tara are attending a glittering variety performance in aid of charity. Steed thanks Tara for inviting him, assuming that the tickets must have cost her a lot of money. She tells him that the opposite is true – the tickets arrived in the post that morning with no covering letter. On the stage the compere introduces Professor Mesmo. He asks for a volunteer from the audience, and selects Tara. He begins to hypnotise her, taking her back in time to her childhood, and asks her to recite a nursery rhyme. The noise covers Professor Mesmo’s whispered command to Tara that she should return to him at the theatre at midnight.

They go back to the shop, Emporium of Magic, and see Professor Mesmo cycling away from it. They trail him across London and out into the country.
