Detail...

Issues: 1044 to 1051, December 18th 1971 to February 5th 1972

Part One - Issue 1044, December 18th 1971:
Mother gives Steed and Tara the bad news - TV Comic #1044ONE evening, John Steed and Tara King receive an urgent summons from Mother to meet him at the offices of the Daily Chronicle in Fleet Street - and when they arrive...

Written by unknown, drawn by John Canning.

Steed and Tara are summoned to the offices of the Daily Chronicle by Mother. Once there he tells them that within the next few minutes they will know if the world is about to be destroyed or not. Steed asks if he isn’t being a bit over dramatic, but Mr. Reader, the editor of the newspaper explains the situation to them. Three days earlier he had received a telephone call from someone telling him that there was a huge meteor heading on course for Earth. The caller said that the most powerful telescopes would be able to see it in 24-hours. This proved to be true, so the editor passed on the information to the Ministry of Defence. The MoD alerted the US, and they have fired a rocket, fitted with a warhead, at the meteor. If it misses, then there are only a few hours left to live.

Part Two - Issue 1045, December 25th 1971:
FAR out in space, a rocket armed with a warhead strikes a huge meteor which had been hurtling towards earth... and the meteor changes course.

Written by unknown, drawn by John Canning.

The rocket hits dead centre and destroys the meteor. Steed and Tara’s work is just beginning, though, as Mother needs them to investigate how the mysterious caller could have known about the meteor before even the biggest telescopes could. The caller had not left his name and address, but he had said that he would call as soon as the danger was over. The phone goes and Steed picks up the receiver. It is a man called Plantagenet Jones. He says that he has more information which could be of vital importance. Steed asks if he can come and see him. Jones agrees, but Plantagenet asks him to come as soon as possible in case they come back again.
